Tweet Typhoon Fanapi prevails in Taiwan
A powerful typhoon swept Taiwan, closing schools and offices and disrupted transport.
Typhoon Fanapi made ashore near the coastal town from Hualien with heavy rain and winds of up to 198 kmh (123 mph).
Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau warned of the danger of grondstortings in mountainous areas.
Last year more than 700 people were killed and thousands left homeless by the floods and mud flows triggered by Typhoon Morakot.
Fanapi - a category three typhoon - the southeastern mainland China later reached Sunday or Monday morning.
TV channels broadcast images of a few branches of uprooted trees in Hualien and a truck overturned while driving along a stretch of road can be seen.
Driving rain and strong winds have also been reported in the capital Taipei and the southern city of Kaohsiung.
Train services and flights were disrupted or canceled and the defense forces in Taiwan has deployed armored personnel carriers in the event of flooding or other emergency, local media reported.
A fire brigade officials said that nearly 6500 people in mountainous regions prone to shifts were evacuated Saturday evening.
